what is colorguard/winterguard?
The WHS colorguard/winterguard is a wonderful group of students who commit to the marching band in the summer/fall and are on their own for indoor competition in the winter.
What is colorguard? Simply put, we are the kids spinning flags with the marching band. We spin flag, spin rifle (some kids) and dance to the music played by the marching band all while moving around on the field in formations. Work and movement is choreographed to enhance the marching band with flags, props and other items. We spend time in the summer learning basics on both flag and in dance and will introduce the wooden rifle to those who express interest and desire. We also perform at parades along side the marching band too. This season will go from May-October. Kids who do marching band receive a grade as it is a class and a PE credit in your senior year. As it is a class, we rehearse after school Monday-Friday with competitions on Saturdays.
Winterguard is colorguard indoors. We start this season in November and have state championships in late March/early April. We perform on a basketball court to choregraphed music of our choice. Sometimes we have a theme, sometimes it’s just a great song, but we always have a good time and learn a lot. As this is not a class, but an activity, we will rehearse 2-3 days a week and compete on Saturdays from the end of January thru end of March/early April. We will travel the front range depending on competition locations.
Over the past five years, the program has grown from ten kids to an average 18-20 per season. Kids are encouraged to participate in both seasons as we use each season to build upon each other.
